Dory fishing in Newport Beach began in 1891 and continues to this day. Jeff Delaney’s book Newport Beach has some information and pictures about the dory fishing fleet in this area:
The dory fishing fleet was founded in 1891 and continues to operate today in its original location, just west of the Newport pier. It has been designated a historical landmark by the Newport Beach Historical Society.
Today the dory fishing fleet zone is delineated by pilings erected by the city and is reserved for full-time dory fishermen, who derive their livelihood from commercial fishing.
