Five Crowns, a fine dining institution in coastal Orange County since 1965, is closing temporarily next month to undergo a remodel.
The restaurant in Corona del Mar, a replica of a England’s oldest country inn Ye Olde Bell, will close after dinner service March 20. It’s the first time Five Crowns will close for a long period since it opened more than 40 years ago. When it reopens in mid-April, it will shed its stuffy décor in favor of rustic contemporary interior furnishings. The menu also will be revamped with many signature dishes (except the prime rib) exiting the menu.
“The current look is tired and dated, and a little fussy,” said Ryan Wilson, who recently replaced retiring executive chef Dennis Brask at the Five Crowns. “We’re moving to a more rustic, approachable elegance.”
Wilson is a fourth generation member of restaurant’s owners and operators. The new Five Crowns menu will reflect his seasonally driven culinary training.
“We will print the menu weekly, and the dishes will run every two to four weeks, based on the success of the dish,” Wilson said. “It’s a fairly significant menu overhaul.”
Old favorites will go into rotation on the menu – offered with new presentations when seasonably appropriate. For example, Wilson said the horseradish crusted salmon will come off the menu and return “when beautiful wild salmon is available in the summer.”
During the closure, the restaurant’s interior look will have a lighter color scheme featuring hardwood flooring, carpet, new chairs and modern lighting.
SideDoor, a gastropub inside Five Crowns but with a separate entrance on Poppy Street, will remain open during the remodel. SideDoor is open 4:30-11 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Sunday it is open for brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 3:30-11 p.m.
Five Crowns is not participating in Orange County Restaurant Week, which launches Sunday.
