“…Balboa Island wasn’t always a thriving residential community. In 1916, it officially became part of the City of Newport Beach, and originally it was a summer vacation place, where families would travel to stay the entire season and then board up the home in the winter. The year-round growth was slow, but in 1920 the first car was pushed across the bay for 10 cents on the ferry between the Balboa Island and the Balboa Peninsula, ushering in a new ease of entry for eager visitors.
The neighborhood is known for three man-made islands–Balboa Island, Little Balboa Island and Collins Island (the smallest with just eight homes)–and a busy boardwalk that circles the two largest islands, each of which is connected by a bridge…”
