Living in Newport Beach: Back Bay

Newport Beach’s Back Bay

Newport Beach’s Back Bay connects Upper Newport Bay with Newport Harbor. The Santa Ana River flows through it and into the Newport Harbor, then out to the Pacific Ocean.

Much of Upper Newport Bay is a protected natural area known as the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve, established in 1975. The Back Bay is a nature reserve to several species of birds. Other available activities include walking and jogging, biking, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding, and picnicking. It’s a popular location on the weekends, and is open each day 7am to sunset.
