The historical Balboa boardwalk

Some old-time photos and history on Balboa follows below:

Bayside Boardwalk, Balboa, c. 1915.

While a boardwalk exits on the bay side west of the pavilion, this portion east of the structure is but a memory.

Ocean front, east Newport, c. 1911

The ocean front in East Newport included the following: 1) Stanley Castlewans’ cottage, 2) Mrs. Lindenberger’s cottage, 3) the Daniels’ cottage, 4) the Abbott cottage, 5) the Evan’s cottage, 6) apartment house between East Newport and Balboa, and 7) Balboa and the hills over at Corona del Mar.

On the beach, Balboa, c. 1919

Swimmers rest on Newport’s two-mile, oceanfront boardwalk.  Constructed in 1917 and 1918, it was the promenade between the villages of Newport and Balboa.  In 1936, a concrete sidewalk replaced the deteriorating wooden boards.
