With their convenient proximity to the ocean, both Newport Beach and Corona del Mar are ideal locations for yacht clubs, something that obviously those clubs agree with, since there are several in the area. A list of the many yacht clubs and their contact information follows below.
NBYC Members may also participate in a wide variety of nautical activities through the Club’s close affiliations with local and national yachting associations. . • Balboa Yacht Club
In 1922, when Newport Harbor was more shoals and sandbars than open water, the Southland Sailing Club, soon renamed the Balboa Yacht Club, was formed by a small group of sailors wanting an active organization with an emphasis on family sailing. From its beginnings in a small wooden structure on open, sandy Balboa Peninsula, BYC has evolved to become one of southern California’s most prestigious yachting organizations.

Lido Isle Yacht Club was incorporated on September 29, 1928, but was not activated during the Depression years. After World War ll, several parents on Lido started teaching sailing to the children. Southern California Yachting Association granted membership to Lido Isle Yacht Club in 1948, and the club was admitted to the Yacht Racing Union of Southern California in 1965.

In 1958, ten yachtsmen put up $100 each and founded the Bahia Yacht Club, based in minimal leased facilities on the grounds of the Balboa Bay Club. The initials BYC were the same as an already established club in the harbor, so the word Corinthian was added to avoid duplication of initials. In the early years, the club consisted mainly of a very active small-boat racing fleet and an enthusiastic group of cruising boats – power and sail. Most BCYC regattas concentrated on small boats until the idea of racing 10-meter boats on a boat-for-boat basis was advanced. Although class racing is commonplace now, it was a daring concept in 1963. The ever-expanding BCYC membership can be justly proud of its facilities and members who carry the burgee, while racing and cruising, to distant parts of the world.

Since 1919 the club’s permanent home has been its historic-landmark front pavilion. The picturesque clubhouse has been remodeled and enlarged but never replaced. Dr. Albert Soiland was the Norwegian-born founder and first commodore of the yacht club.
